While waiting for sunrise... that is Mount Merbabu right in view. Sunrise at 0530am atop Mount Merapi / The sun peeks over the horizon, with the sea of clouds underneath. This view at the top took us 5 hours to get to, when we began hiking at midnight from New Selo base camp. I can still remember the rocky paths, slippery stones and rugged terrain that I was not really prepared for... but I am glad we did it. As we ascended to Pasar Bubrah, we waited for the sunrise and then subsequently, the clouds rolled over. It was breathtaking as we looked over at Mount Merbabu. We were blessed to be in the good hands of our local guides who brought all the outdoor camping essentials (mess tins, tents etc.) and who were always watching for our safety during the entire 10 hours we were with them. Travel musing when I rode pillion on an ojek (the equivalent of a motorbike taxi in Indonesia): When travelling, we put our lives in the hands of the locals, having absolute faith that everything will be okay. It is not the mountain we conquer, but ourselves.
