Train stop #1: Oimachi Our first AirBnB was situated in Oimachi, a train ride away from Shinagawa on the Keihin-Tohoku Line in Tokyo. Our host was a Chinese family, residing in Japan with his two children, who are attending kindergarten in the neighbourhood. It's amazing that they are growing up, learning dual languages in both spheres of socialisation. "When the weather is good and the sky is clear, you will be able to see Mount Fuji from here." Our host excitedly pointed out to us through his kitchen window. I particularly love people-watching at the train stations. Perhaps it is the dynamic nature of people arriving and departing, filling in the cabins and leaving them before the music starts playing and the door closes... signalling the official departure of the train from the station. The train journey is an experience in itself. I still vividly remember how it was like travelling at peak hour with luggage, towards Shinjuku station. Imagine being pushed and shoved to the point of falling, not having any handlebar to hold onto and standing with strangers shoulder to shoulder, catching their gazes the moment you look up? Train stop #2: Seijyogakuen-mae We had this cosy space to ourselves! Lying in the neighbourhood of Setagaya-ku, this apartment is adorned with an interior design that allows natural light to filter in. Staying in AirBnBs like these brings us closer to experiencing how it feels like residing in a Japanese neighbourhood. I am all ready to live in Japan! It's lovely sitting outside train stations too!
